Our trip through the mid-Atlantic continues with two fine Pennsylvania brews, both drawing to some degree on the state's rich German heritage. The Weyerbacher family originally came from Germany over 200 years ago, and descendant Dan Weirback decided to honor his heritage in naming his Easton, Pa. brewery. Weyerbacher is well-known for its Belgian-style brews—Merry Monks and Blithering Idiot among them. The brewery originally made a splash in the mid-'90s with its Raspberry Imperial Stout, but is now better known for the robust and roasty Old Heathen Imperial Stout.

Beers to honor Pennsylvania's German heritage

Lancaster Brewing Co., “inspired by long and rich brewing traditions,” sees itself as honoring the spirit of Lancaster County, Pa. and its Pennsylvania Dutch community. Popular brews include Hop Buggy Amish grain amber ale, Lancaster Lager, and the legendary Milk Stout—America's first milk stout—brewed among the lowing cows and painted barns of Lancaster County since 1995. Also notable is the Kolsch in a can, Lancaster's excellent version of the traditional beer of Cologne, Germany.

Vote for one of these fine brews, and be sure to get your ticket to the Odessa Brewfest, which takes place Sept. 12, 2015 in historic Odessa, Del.
